Broads on BROAD #6
Eve Glenn and Megan Evans

The ”Feminist Mural” artists; Left to Right: Eve Glenn and Megan Evans in 1986

The 6th show of BROAD May 9th 2016 has awesome interviews with Megan Evans one of the original artists of the 30 year old women’s mural in Northcote, Melbourne, called ‘Bomboniere to Barbed Wire’ known locally as the “Feminist Mural” talking about what she thinks of the graffiti artist who ‘capped’/defaced the iconic mural.

Leena Van Deventer

Leena van Deventer, co-author of Game Changers.

Lauren and Sonja talk to author Leena van Deventer about the book she co-wrote called Game Changers: From Minecraft to Misogyny, The Fight for the Future of Videogames.

‘Game Changers is the debut book by co-authors Dan Golding and Leena van Deventer, and its focus is largely on examining the poisoned culture that allowed Gamergate to flourish, and how such unevolved attitudes from a noisy and occasionally criminal minority led to a global flashpoint. That latter adjective is used with purpose: as the authors explain, it is illegal in Australia to use a carriage service — including Twitter or Facebook — to threaten another person, so anyone who has stated their intentions to harm or kill someone else online has broken a law that holds a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.’
Excerpt from The Australian, April,2016.

BROAD’s history of feminist icons continues with Maria Lewis’s Bad Bitches of History with a look at who was Julie d’Aubigny the swashbuckling proto-feminist Bi-sexual opera singer from 17th century France. If Casanova had been a woman it would be Julie AKA La Maupin.

Sonja and Lauren also review the feminist video games film playing at the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival in Melbourne called GTFO by director Shannon Sun-Higgison.
