BROAD’s Sonja Hammer records the second keynote speech at the United Nations Association of Australia’s Economic Empowerment of Women and Girls Forum held on Monday September 5th 2016 in Melbourne. Mary Crooks is the speaker and she explores the history of significant Women in Victoria and Australia.

‘Mary has been the Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust since 1996. She has an extensive background in public policy and a passionate commitment to social justice. In her role as Executive Director Mary has undertaken extensive research and advocacy on crucial issues for women, and has designed and led some ground-breaking initiatives including the Purple Sage Project, Ordinary Women Extraordinary Lives, and the Watermark Australia project, an exceptional example of a nationwide, community engagement project based around issues of water sustainability. In 2012 Mary authored A Switch in Time – Restoring Respect to Australian Politics which has been distributed widely across Australia.’

‘In 2000 Mary Crooks was the inaugural recipient of the Vida Goldstein Award and received the Centenary of Federation medal for her outstanding service to women. In 2012 she was appointed an Officer in the General Division of the Queen’s Birthday Honours (AO) for her ‘distinguished service to the community through contributions to public policy, particularly in the areas of social cohesion and water sustainability, and as an advocate for the advancement of women.’
