Welcome to Game On! JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Tuesday from 7-8pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about you and how you can get your game on by showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!
We are joined in the JOY Studio by Ron Sinclair, Senior Sergeant / Station Commander Box Hill Police Station and Secretary Victoria Police Soccer Club and Chris Wells, President Melbourne Rovers Soccer Club to share the history of the annual Pride Match which is on again – Sunday 29th October. And you are invited to be part of what is a wonderful community event with the Victoria Police Soccer team made up of volunteers.
The annual soccer match is a symbol of support to the LGBTIQA+ community and a celebration of acceptance, pride and respect. In the words of Ron Sinclair, “It’s not about the results. It’s about the relationship”. (Starts 2:15)
Chris Wells, President Melbourne Rovers Soccer Club – Melbourne’s LGBTQIA+ soccer club shares how he came to be President and the opportunities for you to give soccer a go. Head along to their Come & Try sessions in the park. Check out their facebook page for details for a funday Sunday. (Starts 11:24)
Geoff Tripp, General Manager Community Growth and Marketing Basketball NSW, joined us to tell us that registrations are open for an awesome event – the annual Pride In Basketball Australia tournament now in its second year. If you like to dribble, slam dunk, cheer and party then this is the event for your 2024 calendar! (Starts 20:53)
Richard McBrearty, Head Curator – Scottish Football Museum chats to us live from Glasgow to share how the Rainbow community features in the collection. The Gala Fairydean Rovers shirt work by Zander Murray – the first Scottish senior footballer to come out as gay in 2022 – is a prized artefact in Europe’s first national football museum. And there are plans to continue to grow the collection and ensure football is for everyone. (Starts 30:38)
In Who is getting their game on? this week, it’s the National Hockey League teams and players. The National Hockey League has made the extraordinary decision to ban players from all 32 teams from showing support for themed nights which includes using Pride-themed tape on their hockey sticks this season saying it’s a distraction from the game. In response many of the National Hockey League teams have reached out to Jeff McLean, Co-founder of Pride Tape, to see how they can respond to the league’s decision and continue to support the Rainbow community.
You can support the reinstatement the use of Pride Tape in Sport by signing the petition now on Change. Org and sending a message to Gary Bettman Commissioner of the National Hockey League. There are 5548 signatures and counting! (Starts 41:50)
A big thank you to all of our guests for their support of an inclusive and supportive sporting culture and mindset so that everyone can enjoy getting their game on!
