You may have seen recently in the news some stories about HIV here in Australia, and changes to the data and statistics that we are now seeing. While gay and bisexual men still account for the majority of new diagnosis of HIV, over a ten-year period the case numbers have declined by 50%, with rising numbers of HIV diagnosis in heterosexual men and women.
You also may have seen the news that Sydney is on track to virtually eliminate HIV, meaning Australia could well be on the path to eliminating HIV by 2030. This information is pretty massive, but we know it’s never simply about the data with stories like this, which is why JOY Breakfast were joined by Cal Hawk who has been at the 12th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science in Brisbane this past week to help us understand this better.
