Johanna Allen popped by MAD Wednesday for a natter with Michael & Dean.

Draw back on your cigarette and hold on. We’re taking you around the world, a tout le monde. The music of Edith Piaf, Astor Piazzolla, Michel Le Grand, Kurt Weil. Charles Aznavour. Regina Spektor, George Bizet, Federico Fellini, Ennio Morricone, and others are boldly re-imagined.

Drawing on her own European heritage, operatic training and jazz experience, Johanna Allen takes us to the Salons of Paris and the Tango Halls of Spain. There she sings the best of European chanson – ‘Hymme a L’amour’, ‘Padam’, ‘Libertango’, ‘Mack the Knife’, ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’, ‘Amsterdam’, ‘Windmills of Your Mind’, and combines it with popular music boldly re interpreted to sit alongside famous torch songs, from the salons of pre-war Europe. Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ becomes Spanish; Rosemary Clooney’s ‘Mambo Italiano’ is the best of La Dolce Vita. Touching on Bizet’s Carmen, Faure, Rodrigo and En Vivo, Allen shows why she is Maria Callas and the Miami Sound Machine rolled into one.
