It’s an Aussie takeover this week, with a bumper crop of new music added to Melbourne’s most uplifting music mix.
She may just be 19, but American singer-songwriter King Princess is full of confidence about who she is. The gay, gender-queer artist has just visited Australia after the platinum-certified success of ‘1950’, performing to sold-out audiences across the country. Talia is the latest single from her Make My Bed EP and it holds nothing back in telling the story of a love who has left this life. Lie down, turn it up and take the emotion in.
Sydney’s Donatachi is back with another piece of bubbly pop. ‘In Love’ is the latest from his forthcoming EP, and it sees the queer producer borrow the singing talent of Melbourne-based singer Rosebud Leach. Bubblegum beats combine with spoons of sugar and sparkling vocals to deliver a piece of dance-pop ready for your next K-pop-meets-glitter party. Give it a few listens and it’ll stick just like that chewie on your boot.
Since being Freakin Wasted earlier this year, 22-year-old DJ-producer Rojdar has been busy on the club rounds, recently DJing the Ultra marquee in Flemington’s Birdcage. The Melburnian has just dropped ‘Bad’, featuring the vocals of another local, Kyla Fava, and mixed by Zedd’s engineer, Ryan Shanahan. He might have made it big with his debut, Ignition, but this one is sure to spark a huge interest on radio too. Get dancing!
Throw those hands up for a banger from one of our favourite DJ-producers. Australia-via-South-Africa’s Ryan Riback has dusted off his steel drums, practised his whistling and dropped ‘Papercuts’. It’s the debut single for featured artist REED, and allows Aussie band Sunset City to infuse some tropical house with their pop sparkle. This one will make everything OK after the first listen.
Did you hear? Kylie is coming home next year with her Golden tour. The pop princess will have Jake Shears in tow as she travels along the east coast throughout March. In the meantime, she’s still dropping singles from Golden and the latest is here for your workday. ‘Sincerely Yours’ doesn’t have as much of a country twang as ‘Dancin’ and ‘Stop Me From Falling’, which makes this lyrical love letter a stand-out. Of course we love Kylie, and we think you will return the love too.
On the topic of old flames, the Backstreet Boys have announced the release of their 10th studio album, DNA, and a forthcoming tour. It might be 25 years since they landed their first Aussie top 10 with ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’, but the boys are far from slowing down. Shawn Mendes and Ryan Tedder are responsible for the latest single, Chances, and their fingerprints are all over it. A mix of old-school BSB and a kick of fresh pop, this one should hit all the right spots.
New Zealand’s Theia appeared back in 2015 with ‘Silver Second’, following it up in 2016 with one of the year’s most successful songs by a Kiwi artist in ‘Roam’. Candy is the punchy new single, injecting your ears with glitter and sass. It’s lifted from her forthcoming second EP and has already made a mark on the streaming charts. We think it’ll make a mark on you too.
