Dog lovers unite!

Animals, Community, Pets, Society & Culture

We turn to our dogs for emotional support, to stay fit and to let’s face it, put a smile on our face. For many people in our community however, their dog plays an integral part in helping them lead an independent life.

Currently in Australia around 900 people with a vision-impairment rely on a guide dog to go about their daily lives.

A recent survey by Guide Dogs Australia however, has shown that an alarming 40 per cent of guide dog handlers surveyed said their guide dog has been attacked by another dog. Most of which were caused by dogs off lead.

Today on Pets-A-Loud, we speak with Karen Hayes, CEO of Guide Dogs Victoria and Bry, a guide dog user about their new public education campaign Take the Lead on how we as dog owners can be more responsible with our pets in public spaces.

Also coming up on the program today:

  • The Dog Lovers Show is back and well underway so we’ll cross live to Sharon our fundraising team leader and roving reporter to get the latest.
  • Among the many things we’re promoting at the show is adoption and Kate, we’ll be hearing your heart warming catch up with the adopter of one of your former and much adored fosters, Buddy.
  • We’ll also be checking in with starlit Scarlette’s owner Janette, on what she’ll be getting up to at the Dog Lovers Show.
