Saturday 4th Feb 2023: Centre Right approach to hearing Indigenous Voices – Centre Independent Studies and Wrap Up

Macca and Nevena are joined by Damien Freeman live on air, as they discuss a centre  right approach to hearing Indigenous Voices.

Conservative think tank the Centre for Independent Studies has published an essay examining options for a constitutionally enshrined Indigenous voice.

The centre’s decision to publish Greg Craven and Damien Freeman’s case for reform – called Guaranteeing a Grassroots Megaphone: A centre-right approach to hearing Indigenous voices – is considered a significant acknowledgment by the think tank that it is legitimate for people on the right to have different views on the voice.

“We have reached a point at which governments no longer presume to know what is best for each of Australia’s many and distinct Indigenous communities, but that does not mean that they are succeeding in hearing from those communities about what sorts of solutions they believe will work in their particular communities,” Professor Craven and Mr Freeman wrote.

“Australian governments are currently making efforts to adopt such approaches, but the current structures still appear to be inadequate.”

The essay states a “grassroots megaphone can succeed in helping people on the ground bring about practical change”.

Damien Freeman is the principal policy adviser at the PM Glynn Institute, Australian Catholic University. His publications include Abbott’s Right: the conservative tradition from Menzies to Abbott (MUP, 2017) and most recently Killer Kramer: Dame Leonie – a woman for all seasons (Connor Court, 2022).
