Abdurahman Katamish, known as Boudie, is an Egyptian-born LGBTIQ+ advocate who moved to Melbourne seeking a more inclusive environment. In Egypt, he co-founded an underground organization to support queer individuals, despite cultural stigmas.
In Melbourne, Boudie turned to volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly becoming active with Thorne Harbour Health, where he helped deliver pantry parcels to people living with HIV. He has since volunteered with the Victorian Pride Centre, Midsumma Festival, and Hares & Hyenas, among others. Boudie also co-founded Queer Muslim Naarm with Sasja Sydek, an initiative dedicated to supporting queer Muslims in Melbourne and fostering a sense of community and belonging.
As the Volunteer Engagement Officer at Thorne Harbour Health, Boudie plays a key role in coordinating volunteers and engaging with the community. His dedication to volunteering has earned him awards like the Thorne Harbour Health Special Service Award and the GLOBE Award for LGBTIQ Volunteer of the Year.
The intersectionalities of Boudie’s identity as a queer Muslim inspire his commitment to community building. Through Queer Muslim Naarm, he seeks to create a safe space for queer Muslims, challenging cultural stigmas and providing support. Boudie believes in the transformative power of volunteering and encourages newly arrived LGBTIQ+ individuals to build connections to feel a sense of belonging in a new environment.
