Films, Rocky Horror 40th, Hidden Faces & Linden Postcard Show

Spring is finally here with consistently beautiful days and David tells us that Brendan’s been sending fab photos of European art and architecture to their Facebook page.

Daniel discusses 2 films in detail including 1) Everest—about mountaineers climbing Everest in 1996 who get caught in a storm. It show their their escalating emotions and those of friends and family. Mount Everest as the antagonist is excellent and the film often has it overshadowing the A-List actors. Daniel liked the film 4 stars. David, however, doesn’t like the subject matter and won’t see it. 2) Sicario (or Hitman)– is about the drug war on the border between Mexico and the US. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, it is a solid film with a good performance from Emily Blunt but Daniel was disappointed and thought it was not up to par with Villeneuve’s previous work 2.5 stars

Today (27th September) is the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the US. David saw the original stage show in London and many since then and discusses these and the movie with Daniel.

Today’s guests are visual artists and they are:

Ellen Palmer-Hubble is an Artist who has artwork in an exhibition called Hidden Faces at the Hilton Melbourne lobby in South Wharf until 14th October. It’s an exhibition of Victorian artists’ portrait work which had been submitted to various National Portrait Prizes and didn’t get exhibited. Ellen has submitted to The Archibald 6 times over the years and competition keeps getting fiercer. She’s inspired by her sitters and uses The Archibald as a catalyst to up her standards and meet interesting people. She was greatly influenced by her father and became an oil painter and teacher like him. Her portrait sitter this year was Andrew Chapman—a brilliant photographer who has haemochromotosis which is what Ellen’s dad died from. The portrait is being used to raise awareness of the condition.

Robert Fenton is an artist who won First prize at the Linden Postcard Show at Linden New Art Gallery. There were about 900 entries this year and the gallery has hung up all of them at The Linden Postcard Show on until 21st November. Robert put in 3 postcards with a theme. The winning one is called ‘In the old days, delivery of contemporary art was a hazardous profession’ showing a lone person in a boat carrying a large artwork which is capsizing the boat. Robert and our hosts discuss the show, Robert’s and other works, the judging and the affordability of the art. Robert is a full-time artist who enters competitions and exhibits all over Australia to be able to get a ‘good feeling’, some feedback, to build his CV and to sell his Art. He recently won a competition on the Sunshine Coast which gave him quite a bit of money and has a show starting on 2nd October 2015 at Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery comprised of 120 portraits of local people.
