Harry Potter turns 20. What impact did the books have on queer fans?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has just turned 20. The first book in the series about a young wizard and his friends would go on to spawn a multi-billion dollar book, film and theatre global empire.

But it is also huge in the LGBTI community. The characters’ struggles and identities were relatable to queer people everywhere.

Two queer Harry Potter fans Gx Australia’s and proud Slytherin, Liam Esler, and Sydney-based writer Jemima Skelley (Ravenclaw) join The Informer to discuss how the books shaped them as people.
