Fallen Angel by Alphaville.  From Forever Young, Alphaville’s debut album from 1984.

That Girl by Stevie Wonder. Request.

Ne partez pas sans moi by Celine Dion. Request. Her 1988 Eurovision win for Switzerland.

What do all the People Know by The Monroes.  The one hit wonder New Wave pop band from San Diego active throughout most of the 1980s NOT the Norwegian band of the same name.  This is their best known single, from 1982.

Believe it or not by Joey Scarbury:  1981’s theme song for US tv show The Greatest American Hero.  It also appeared in Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 on the scene when President George W. Bush declares the Iraq Mission Accomplished. Chino’s request from last week.

Love Comes Around by Grapes of Wrath.  One of Canada’s most successful pop bands in the late 1980s and early 1990s before disbanding in 1992. With the band name tied up in litigation, most of the band continued to record through the 1990s as Ginger.  This is from 1986’s September Bowl of Green, owned by my friend Kris on vinyl after hearing them play in Toronto.

Fairytale in the Supermarket by The Raincoats.  1979 single from this all female post-punk band so admired by Kurt Cobain.  He wrote the liner notes to their first album when it was re-released in 1994 (1979’s self-titled debut, which did not include this single from the same year in its first release).

Lean on Me by Club Nouveau.  R&B/pop band formed by record producer/ performer Jay King in 1986 in Sacramento, California, subsequent to the break up of the Timex Social Club.  The band’s name (“New Club”) was changed from its original incarnation, Jet Set, to exploit the break up of the Timex Social Club.  This was the third chart hit from their debut album, Life, Love, and Pain, which was released in 1986.  It is of course a cover of the Bill Withers’ 1972 original.

Who Do You Give Your Love To? by Michael Morales.  From his self-titled debut in 1989.  He is better known as a producer and founder of Studio M with his brother Ron.  He’s worked with Selena, Beyonce, Def Leppard, and many others.

I wanna wake up with you by Boris Gardiner.  1986 no. 1 hit in the UK for this Jamaican-born singer, songwriter and guitarist who had been playing and recording since the ‘60s before this surprise hit brought him to mainstream awareness.

Aussies: Peter Allen for Kari

*+I Honestly Love You by Peter Allen. 1975 single from Continental American, his 3rd album.

*+I go to Rio by Peter Allen. 1976 single from Taught by Experts.

*+Bicoastal by Peter Allen. Title track from his 6th album, released in 1980.

*+You and Me We wanted it All by Peter Allen. His final single release, 1984. It was on Not the Boy Next Door.

*+I Could Have Been a Sailor by Peter Allen. Title track to his 5th album from 1979.

*+I Still Call Australia Home by Peter Allen. 1980 track that hardly made a blip in the charts, just 60 here in Oz. But yet it’s probably as well known as Rio, his only no. 1 hit. This was from 1980.

Nipple to the Bottle by Grace Jones. Request.

(I’ll Never Be) Maria Magdalena by Sandra. Sandra Ann Lauer, commonly known under her stage name Sandra, is a German pop singer, who enjoyed a mainstream popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s with a string of European hit singles, produced by her then-husband and musical partner, Michael Cretu. This 1985 hit is her best known.

Live is Life by Opus. Long-lived Austrian band from Graz…they’ve been active since 1973! This is their best known track, from 1984.

You’re a Woman by Bad Boys Blue. Their second single, the first to chart…top 10 in several European countries. They are German and have been playing together since 1984.

Voyage Voyage by Desireless. French artist, Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop. This is a 1986 track that made her a fortune and has pretty much kept her going ever since. She was very hot then…not so much now.
