Playlists

22 May 2016 – Show 286

Sunshine Reggae by Laid Back. Danish group’s best known track, released in 1983.

*Burnt Sienna by Margaret Urlich. Request.

I Like Chopin by Gazebo. 1983 track by Paul Mazzolini, who was born in Beirut, the son of an Italian diplomat and an American singer. This was his second single and later the self-titled album it was featured on came to be known as I Like Chopin. Played 1 minute last week, here’s the rest.

If I could Turn Back Time by Cher. Request for her 70th bday.

Slave to the Rhythm by Grace Jones. For her 68th bday.

+When the Night is Cold by Army of Lovers. Swedish dance band from the 80s and 90s who take their name from a 1979 German doco about gay rights activism. Two band members, Alexander Bard and Jean-Pierre Barda, are both out and proud. This is their 1988 debut, non-album single, though it was later re-released on Master Series, a best-of compilation from the late 1990s.

+I Love the Nightlife by Alicia Bridges. She’s openly lesbian and has been at least since a 1998 interview with The Advocate. This is her big 1978 hit. She looks quite a bit like my first girlfriend…I had no idea she was a white woman till this week!

+Taxi by Big in Japan. From their 1985 album, From Y to Z and Never Again. They tick the LGBTIQ box for their bass player and vocalist, Holly Johnson – much better known for his work with Frankie Goes to Hollywood but this is where he got his start.

+Army of Me by Bjork. 1995 single from Post, her third solo album, released in 1995. Based on her own experiences, she believes we’re all bisexual, to some degree.

Aussies I’ve never played!!

*It’s Gone by The Mungabeans. Indie rock from Brisbane active between 1984-92. The band comprised guitarist/singer-songwriter Paul Grogan, bass player/vocalist Guy Mansfield and drummer/producer, Lord Mike McCann. Evan Clarry, now a feature filmmaker, was rhythm guitarist and occasional vocalist from 1984 to 1987. This is a 1989 single.

*Not Even Close by Chris Bailey. On a 1994 collection from Earth Music. Chris is better known as co-founder and singer of rock band The Saints.

*Don’t Change by Dave Steel and the Roadside Prophets. From the same album. Dave was with Weddings, Parties, Anything for awhile.

*Over Now by The Falling Joys. Same album. They were a pretty busy Canberra band that I don’t know how I missed!  Sorry!!!

*The World Got Everything In It by Uptown Rulers w/Ross Wilson. Can’t find anything about the Australian Uptown Rulers other than they included Joe Creighton…I also know they’re not the American ska outfit.

*Holywell by Joe Creighton. Title track to his 1994 solo album.

Don’t Tell me the Time by Martha Davis.  Lead singer of the Motels went out on her own for this track from her solo debut album, Policy, from 1987.

Perfect by Fairground Attraction.  The band’s first single, released in March 1988.  It reached number one on 9 May 1988 on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for one week, and stayed in the chart for thirteen weeks. It also reached number one in South Africa as well as here in Australia for three weeks in August and September 1988.  The band’s only other claim to fame is that Eddi Reader, Scottish vocalist well known for her solo work, was their lead vocalist.

Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass. This is their 1987 debut single. It was actually released in the UK disguised as a U.S. import in an attempt to conjure the mystique of Bomb the Bass being an underground New York act. It worked and the single eventually reached number two on the UK charts, far exceeding expectations.

Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds.  written for the soundtrack to the film The Breakfast Club and performed by the band Simple Minds in 1985. The songwriters were producer Keith Forsey (who won an Oscar for “Flashdance… What a Feeling”) and Steve Schiff (guitarist and songwriter from the Nina Hagen band). With 3, all of which were for this song so I had to play it!

Reach the Beach by The Fixx. Title track to their 1983 album, their second and best selling…including their biggest hit, One Thing Leads to Another.

Smile like Heaven by Clan of Xymox. Request.
