From Sidewalk to Catwalk – Jean Paul Gaultier

Ground-breaking French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier’s superbly crafted haute couture, ready-to-wear and red carpet fashion is on show in the exclusive exhibition “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” at the National Gallery of Victoria until the 8th of February 2015.

The exhibition features more than 140 intricate and highly-detailed garments spanning his creative output, from the first dress created in 1971 and the launch of his prêt-à-porter collection in 1976 to his most recent haute couture collections.

The highly contemporary exhibition, featuring 32 custom ‘talking’ mannequins, is curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot and organised by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris.

Our guest on Word For Word is Paola Di Trocchio, Curator of Fashion and Textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria, where, since 2003 she has curated and co-curated thirteen exhibitions including co-ordinating co-curator of the touring exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.

Previous exhibitions include Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion, Dior and Yamamoto: The New Look, ManStyle, Drape: Classical Mode to Contemporary Dress, Black in Fashion: Mourning to Night, Remaking Fashion and Super Bodies: Heroic Fashion of the 1980s, among others.

She has been Visiting Research Scholar at the Museum at the Fashion Institution of Technology in New York and undertaken a residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in the Furniture, Textiles and Fashion department.
