North Korea: International law and world politics getting in the way of basic human rights

Asia/Pacific

The World Wide Wave team gets a rare insight into life for gays, lesbians and trans people in a reclusive culture and closed country. We explore gay life behind the tin curtain as we venture to North Korea.

Are there any gay people at all in the hermit kingdom? If gay rights are human rights, what is life like in a country where there is apparently none of either? Which Aussie has drawn the ire of Pyong-Yang so much so that they called him a “disgusting old lecher with a 40-odd-year-long career of homosexuality”?

To understand gay life in North Korea, we spoke with Dr Paula Gerber from Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation. Paula coordinates the United Nations shadow reports and is a human rights law expert.

Find out more on W3JOY’s North Korea homepage.
