In Focus – Kenya

Flag_KenyaWe’ve covered the struggles of LGBT people in Africa many times on this show.  Few times though have we had to address orchestrated mob violence as is being reported in Kenya.

  • How are police and political leaders responding to these claims?
  • What part do religious leaders play in inciting violence against the LGBT community?
  • How does this violence impact the delivery of health services for men who have sex with men and sex workers?

To investigate Kenya’s mob violence mentality, we spoke with Esther Adhiambo PEMA (Persons Marginalized and Aggrieved) Kenya.  They are a Mombasa-based community organisation that provides support to gender and sexual minorities on human rights, health, HIV/AIDS, and economic well-being. Human Rights Watch and PEMA have just released a report titled “The Issue is Violence: Attacks on LGBT People on Kenya’s Coast“.

Original date of broadcast – 20/10/2015
