Romania: Fighting a Citizen’s Initiative

romaniaBroadcast – 16 August 2016

Three million people, about a quarter of the country’s population, have signed a petition for a referendum to ban marriage equality. Currently Romania, like many other countries in Eastern Europe, does not recognise marriage equality or civil unions between LGBTIQ couples.

  • Why is the government considering legislating a ban on something that is already not legal?
  • Which respected international organisations have come to the side of the LGBTIQ community?
  • What impacts might this have on Romania’s membership of the European Union?

Informing us about the considerable challenges facing the Romanian LGBTIQ community is Florin Buhuceanu from Accept Romania.
