This week we celebrate the birthday of Jane Lynch, an out and proud member of our community known for her role in TV’s affirming show Glee.

We remember the appointment this week in 1900 of Australia’s first Governor General, John Hope, we talk about the first European sighting in 1770 of a Kangaroo and the exhibition in US of the weird platypus in 1922.

This week is also celebratory for the French for the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 and for French Unity Day 15 July 1790. Another riot remembered was in 1095 when Christian Crusaders massacred almost everyone in Jerusalem.

Closer to home, we are reminded that after a chance discovery on 18 July 1873 explorer William Gosse named Ayers Rock, now more correctly known as Uluru. Also, 13 July 1940 is the birthday of Patrick Stewart, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame.
