This week we celebrate the anniversary of first appearance in 1940 of that rascally rabbit Bugs Bunny who gave us so much pleasure in our younger days.

We celebrate the works of Aboriginal icons Albert Namatjira (born 28 July 1902), Evonne Goolagong (born 31 July 1951) and the announcement on 28 July 1993 of the Opal as Australia’s national gemstone; in aboriginal folklore, when a rainbow fell to earth.

On 1 August 1949 the Snowy Mountain Authority came into being; the hydro scheme was the greatest engineering feat in 20th Century Australia.

We report on a couple of Australian icons from our community: Kylie Kwong and Ian Roberts. Another notable icon was James Baldwin (born 2 August 1924), a US novelist, social critic and black & gay rights activist.
