Gordon, Phil and David talk LGB celebrity birthdays for this week including– onetime SA Premier Don Dunstan 21/9/69 (d: 1999), UK Comedian Sue Perkins 22/9/69, artist William Dobell 24/9/1899 (d:1970) and US singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco 23/9/70. Also this week were born a couple of PMs from history– Ben Chifley 22/9/1885 and Billy Hughes 25/9/1862.

Today (21/9) is Maltese Independence Day and our holidaying host, Chris, will most likely be there celebrating with them.

This Wednesday 23/9 is Bisexuality Day started up by a group of bisexuals chatting around a table in the USA and many countries in the world now mark the occasion. Australia??

On 23/9/1993 Juan Antonio Samaranch announced that Sydney won the bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games and Phil tells us The Simpsons’ City missed out. On the same day in 2009 Sydney was covered by a huge dust storm similar to one Melbourne had in 1983.

In September 1942 The Manhattan project started – to design and build an atomic bomb; and at the same time in the 50s, British Nuclear tests in Maralinga SA commenced causing many people to become sick.

On 24/9/1664 New Amsterdam became New York–tentatively at first and then permanently after 1674.

On 26/9 in the early 1800s—Colonel Robert Johnson ate a bushel of tomatoes to prove they were safe to eat as they were generally believed to be poisonous– a ‘stinking golden apple’.

On the same day in 1991, 8 people first went into Biosphere No 2 in Arizona to test how they could live and grow food on another planet, but the experiment was eventually aborted.
