Building Codes, Slavery abolished, Women get Vote, A Xmas Carol

This week we remember birthdays of gay notables. From the JOY 94.9 studio windows we can see the construction of a new highrise building here in Melbourne and we are reminded that no building codes existed in early colonial days. Gov.Macquarie introduced the first code in Sydney and then organised the town plan for Hobart.

We talk about the abolition of slavery in the US in 1865, a mere 29 years before women of South Australia earned the right to vote.

We discuss the social environment which lead Charles Dickens to write ‘A Christmas Carol’ – which comments upon class structure and peoples misfortunes in 19th Century England, written with a Christmas theme..
