Been There Done That

31 Dec 2015

Xmas, Newcastle, Colony of SA, Yacht disasters, JE Hoover,Cabaret

Book, Gay, History

Today the boys talk about their Christmas experience, lament the time when Sundays were rest days for everyone and discuss wages and living costs.

They remember the Newcastle earthquake on 28 December 1989 which caused much damage, due to buildings not being earthquake-proof such as those in more earthquake prone areas like San Francisco. On the same day in 1836 South Australia was proclaimed a colony and consisted of free settlers who were invited to come over and settle. On 29 December 1998, 6 people from the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race were killed when a storm hit. Only 44 out of 115 yachts actually made it to Hobart.

In 1696 William the Third introduced a Window Tax, which resulted in many bricked up windows, and was replaced in 1851 by a Land tax. Gay birthday and deathdays this week include FBI Director J Edgar Hoover (born 1 January 1895) a repressed gay man who was investigating others’ lives and Anglo-American Author Christopher Isherwood (died 4 Jan 1986) whose one paragraph mention of Sally Bowles in his book I Am A Camera became the hit musical Cabaret.
