Happy2016!, Braille, Davey Lamp, Lighting, Solar Power, Birthdays

Gay, History, Icons, Inventions

Happy New Year greetings from Chris, Gordon, Phil and Tristan as we commence another year of BTDT trivia!

On this day in 1809 Louis Braille was born – later to invent the raised dot method of representing the alphabet in a way sight-impaired people could interpret. In 1816 the Davey Safety Lamp was demonstrated in methane-filled coal mines, avoiding the usual explosions. This was just one invention in the history of lighting from the cave to today. We chat about Edison, modern quartz-halogen globes and now LED lighting; how humans are banishing the darkness – maybe to the detriment of our own health. We note how solar cars first started racing across Australia in 1983 and the progress to electric cars as well as the use of Photo-Voltaic solar panels as the preferred source of electricity in modern homes and factories.

We remember anniversaries of gay notables Rudolf Nureyev, Sir Robert Baden-Powell [Scouts], Graham Chapman [Monty-Python], Sal Mineo and Johnny Ray.

Plus other trivia and mirth …..
