We reflect upon the highly successful 2016 Midsumma Carnival Day. We celebrate anniversaries and birthdays which happen this week, including lesbian Patricia Highsmith born in 1921 – American novelist, prolific writer of psychological thrillers, including Carol – a film currently showing in Melbourne, with Cate Blanchett.

We reveal more of the secret story of film stars – today birthday boy Cary Grant – and his life shared with fellow actor Randolph Scott. Gay singers celebrating birthdays this week are Gary Barlow and Will Young.

Today is the anniversary of the 2003 firestorms in and around Canberra which included the destruction of Mt Stromlo Telescope & Observatory. We remember that on 14/1/1968 Dorothea Mackellar died – she wrote the poem ‘My Country’ – which begins ‘I love a sunburnt country/ A land of sweeping plains/…’.

Phil tells us about the early days of Apple Mac. We remind ourselves that it is less than 100 years ago that the first insulin injections were given; prior to that, people with diabetes had no cure.

Plus some trivia and mirth …..
