Been There Done That

25 Jan 2016

Birthdays, Republic, W.Hobson, Waitangi, Royal tennis, Planet 9

Gay, Health, History, Icons, Lesbian, Science

We celebrate gay birthdays occurring this week, including Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum, Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi, Adam Lambert and ally Justin Timberlake.

We remember that in 1895 our founding politicians embarked on a 4-year exercise to prepare a new Constitution, used at 1901 Federation. We compare this with current moves to advance the Australian Republic and wonder whether the new date will become our Republic Day and January 26 will revert to be just Botany Bay Day.

We connect the dots in the story of William Hobson, Williamstown and Hobsons Bay; and follow him to NZ in the early days of settlement and the Treaty of Waitangi – wherein Maori Rights were recognised.

We chat about the Royal French roots of tennis and wonder at the discovery of Planet 9, remembering the ideals of the Outer Space Treaty, adopted in 1967.

Plus some trivia and mirth …..
