The World Stage – people, events and music

Soon the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest will be upon us and this year Australia’s entry is Jessica Mauboy with her song ‘We Got Love’ – a song of healing by love. We’ll also see Ireland’s gay couple walking hand-in-hand in the music video of their entry. And we know from previous song contests that there will be a quite a few more gay artists, costumes, sets and performances. Can’t wait!

Locally, the Melbourne Queer Film Festival is off to a great start with another wonderful selection of films from around the world, with stories relevant to our community.

We discuss two amazing thinkers; men of science – who share the date 14 March: Albert Einstein was born on this day in 1879; and Stephen Hawking died on this day in 2018. Both contributed greatly to our understanding of the workings of the cosmos. In the fantasy world of cinema we have the fictional characters of Capt James T Kirk (who will be born on 21/3/2233!) and Mr Spock – the Vulcan (played by Leonard Nimoy – born 26/3/1931).

Taking a world-view of our weather, we are reminded of World Meteorological Day which was first celebrated on 23/3/1950, in recognition of sharing observational data & resources, in striving to understand the science of weather and weather-predictions. Now we have satellites and web-cams giving real-time views, and modern, fast number-crunching high-speed ‘brainiac’ computers which give us those wonderful weather-maps and interpretations, that we see at the end of every TV newscast.

We note that Prince William of Britain has adopted the task of seeking the righting of wrongs when 200 hundred years ago the English colonies were saddled with anti-GLBTIQ laws, which are still on the colonial books, but removed from current British law.

Anniversaries around this time include Rosie O’Donnell, Andrea Goldsmith & Dorothy Parker, Elton John, Noel Coward and Hubert Givenchy.

Listen to these stories, opinions and more, presented with some merriment by Chris, Gordon & Phil.

Show #795 – First broadcast on 20 March 2018
