New music to weekdays (4 February, 2015)

Spada & Elen Levon – Cool Enough (HUS/UMA) [AU]
Avicii feat Salem Al Fakir – The Nights (UMA)
Ella Henderson – Empire (SME)
Elle King – Ex’s & Oh’s (RCA/SME)
G.R.L. – Lighthouse (SME)

Sydney lass Elen Levon kicks off our new music this week with the local release of a song produced and released by Italian producer Spada in mid-2014, which topped the Italian iTunes dance charts. Cool Enough has plenty of that old-school 90s Eurohouse vibe that is back in vogue right now.

Originally put down as a track for a 2012 FIFA World Cup compilation album that never eventuated, Avicii brings us his most genre-bending track yet. Featuring Swedish singer-songwriter Salem Al Fakir, who helped Avicii out on previous hits ‘Silhouettes’ and ‘You Make Me’, The Nights has already leapt into the top 10 here in Australia..

The UK’s Ella Henderson will be hoping to replicate the mid-2014 success of her debut single, ‘Ghost’, with her third single, ‘Empire’. A sync with TV promotion for the new series of Downton Abbey should help.

New to Australian audiences is American musician Elle King, whose musical style encompasses country, soul, rock and blues. If you like Gin Wigmore or Duffy, then Ex’s & Oh’s will definitely be your bag.

Also switched in this week is the Mike Rizzo Funk Generation Club Mix (JOY edit) of Madonna’s lead single, Living for Love, from her forthcoming album, Rebel Heart.

Finally, US-Canadian-British girl group G.R.L. made a huge impact on the charts last year with their debut single, ‘Ugly Heart’. Sadly, last September band member Simone Battle took her own life. The remaining quartet have teamed up with Give an Hour, an American organisation that helps raise awareness of mental health issues. The band wanted the topic of mental health and depression to be talked about more openly, especially among their younger fans, to including the signs to look out for. Lighthouse is dedicated to Simone’s memory, and the accompanying video, containing images of Simone compiled by her family, is about ‘being there for your friends’.

Set your alarm and tune into Rochén and Michael on the six at six for the newest songs to the mix, every weekday at 6am Melbourne time.
