News & Politics

Youth homelessness is on the rise across Australia and with inadequate funding from the Federal Government, homelessness and housing peak bodies are having a tough time keeping young people safe and off the streets.

But what does youth homelessness mean to the Australian economy?

A recent study out of Charles Sturt University reveals that youth homelessness is costing the Australian Economy a staggering $626 million annually.

This week, Stephanie McLean chats with Charles Sturt’s Professor Adam Steen about this research, to find out what investments could be made to bring not only the economic costs, but the social costs of youth homelessness down.

“Early intervention saves money”.

Emma Arnold also delves into the burgeoning issue of youth homelessness within the LGBTI community. She is joined by Sherri Bruinhout from the Melbourne City Mission to talk about what the organisation is doing to support young, homeless LGBTI individuals in Melbourne.

“We absolutely would move mountains to protect people’s rights to get what they’re entitled to as a citizen in a very fair and equitable way”.
