Anal Sex for Everyone!*

For the last 13 years, Queensland has been the only state in Australia to make a distinction between different forms of sexual activity and the age of consent. For anal sex, the age was 18. For everything else; 16.

On the 16th of September, the Queensland Labor Party successfully passed an amendment to the Criminal Code Act 1899 to bring the age of consent for anal sex to 16, as well as changing the words from ‘sodomy’ to anal intercourse in the Act.

Despite strong bipartisan support of the bill (only the 2 Katter MPs voted against the change) it has not pleased everyone, with Federal Queensland LNP MP George Christensen claiming the bill will allow old men to have sex with 16 year old men legally.

Before Queensland, NSW had been the latest state to equalize consent with an amendment in 2003.

Why is this issue important? And if it is, why did it take Queensland so long?
