The Kitchen Table

9 Mar 2014

Timor Leste is full of beans

Australia, Food, International

Coffee – the life source of many a Melbourneite is worthy of discussion. This week the Kitchen Table are joined by Tom Mahon, a former peace keeper turned business entrepreneur, to talk coffee and his involvement with it.

Tom is a spokesman for the company Wild Timor Coffee.

Wild Timor Coffee is made up of four former peace keepers who were stationed in Timor Leste at a retransmission station. The men made contact with the local community and began a business that sees them trading with local farmers and importing beans to Australia to sell in the Melbourne coffee scene.

Wild Timor Coffee prides itself on ethical trade with the Timor Leste farmers and ensures the farmers get a fair price for their coffee.

The Kitchen Table also get to go to a festival, and by ‘get to’ I mean stay in the studio and cross live. They interview the very lucky Megan from Berry Street who was at Chill Out taking in the sun and all the coffee available out there – also she may have been working and trying to encourage people to become foster carers. All that I know is that she failed to tell Shannon what coffee she was drinking.

Shannon had three black coffees in the space of an hour and her team think she may have an addiction. Megan laughed at Shannon’s coffee suggestion and the very wise panelist Christian Vega thought of turning Shannon’s mic off but failed to do so in time before Shannon said things she may regret later. Shannon reports her coffee intake is more of a hobby.
