This week we talks about IDAHO Day on 17 May–International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia. It was conceived in 2004 to get the community out there to ‘think’.

We open the closet door on some ‘respectable’ members of US society, and learn about their ‘other’ lives. Under the microscope are 1) rugby player Mark Bingham of Flight 93, September 11 fame whose memory is continued via the Rugby Gay World Cup better known as the Bingham Cup; 2) Raymond Burr known on TV as the respectable lawyer Perry Mason and wheelchair bound detective Ironside but had a very different private life and was a great philanthropist 3) Liberace- the showman with over the top sparkly costumes, and candelabras on his gold piano.

And to provide gender balance, we discuss two larger-than-life icons 1) Cher whose singing career took off after she left Sonny and who has a transgender child, and 2) UK/Australian entertainer, character actress, human rights campaigner and self-confessed ‘dyke’–Miriam Margolyes.

And last but not least is Ted Allen, a US food specialist who appeared on Queer Eye and can now be seen on Australian TV with his show ‘Chopped’.
