Volunteers, Pearl Harbour, The Chocolate Tin, F.Asmussen, Hubble

This week we acknowledge the many services provided by volunteers in our community, celebrated on International Volunteer Day,4 December every year. We also thank some recent correspondents who have written to the show with positive feed-back.

In world history, we compare the turmoil in 1940’s with the territorial claims by Japan at that time & their attack on US fleet at Pearl Harbour. We wonder if there is any similarity with present day events by countries to the north of us.

Gordon reviews the book “The Chocolate Tin” – a novel by Fiona Macintosh – centred around the Rowntree chocolate company in England and how they sent gift-boxes to troops in WW1, and the personal story of a gay man who is subjected to aversion therapy of the worst kind in an insane asylum.

We reflect upon to contribution of Freddy Asmussen – Head of Display in the 1960’s at Myers Melbourne – who presented the Christmas-themed window displays for many years; a fashion continued to this day, and copied by stores around the world.

Phil gives us some background to the repairs to the Hubble Space Telescope some 13 years ago.

Plus some trivia and mirth and much more ….
