Australian Open 2014 – Preview
Some big names are already firing this year in the lead up to the Australian Open Tennis championships, with Leyton Hewitt, Serena Williams, Juan Martin Del Potro all winning titles in Brisbane and Sydney. There were a couple of surprise upsets with Svetana Pironkova beating fifth seed Kerber in the Sydney final, and Nishikori winning in straight sets over Thomas Berdych at Kooyong. France had an historic win in the Hopman cup in Perth over Poland, and Sam Stosur had another heart breaking loss again in her Hobart Semi final.
But the biggest news before the tournament was the bad draw that our Aussis have received. In round one: Stosur will face Zakopalova again, Ash Barty has the powerful Serena williams, and Bernard Tomic will play the number one seed Raphael Nadal in what is sure to be a centre court highlight.
The Aussies also grabbed the last 8 wild cards of the tournament, which include exciting youngster Nick Kyrgios. Temperatures set to sour on court with some of the warmest weather Melbourne has seen this summer.
