There were major developments for women’s rights in the 20th century, with gender discrimination becoming forbidden by law, women granted maternity leave, women being allowed to vote and the right to abortion being a few of these gains. But in this century there are still many gains to be made, one being the legislation of same-sex marriage. Since 2001, 15 countries have legalised same-sex marriage but Australia is not among them.
In an Australian Marriage Equality survey, 62% of all Australians were reported as supporting same-sex couples.
