Election, NAIDOC, Romans, US Indep.Day, 000, J.Morali, N.Tennant

This week, as we wait for the results of the 2016 Double-Dissolution Election; we reflect upon the events, people and history of Indigenous Australians and we celebrate NAIDOC week–starting with a song by Georgia Lee, a famous Indigenous blues singer in the 50s and 60s.

Social behaviour and acceptability has changed over the years and we remember Roman Emperor Hadrian and the Greek/Roman society of that time which permitted single-sex relationships and we note recent events in US, Canada and the UN which affect present day LGBTIQ human rights.

We chat about American Independence Day (4 July) and the speed with which the founding fathers united the existing states, in contrast to the slow process of Australian state unification.

We thank the British for implementing a number for emergencies on 1 July 1937. It was and is 999. Australia has 000 but due to the prevalence of US TV programs, many think it is 911.

Birthday notables in early July include Jacques Morali (creator and producer of the Village People) and Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys musician).

Plus some trivia and mirth …..
