After today, Chris is off to Europe for a few weeks!! Colin is with us again and will be accompanying Gordon (and hopefully Phil) while Chris is away!!

Today we talk about the devastating earthquake that hit Central Italy a week ago decimating the fragile old buildings more than a century old and also in ‘Italy’ in Roman times, Mount Vesuvius erupting and completely burying the town of Pompeii. Closer to home, in 1883, there was the catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa (Indonesia) which could be heard around the world

We celebrate our National flower- the Golden Wattle– which also has the national colours of green and gold. It needs a fire to pop the seed pods which leads us to chat about bushfires in Australia and the Great Fire of London in 1666–and their cleansing effects!

We pay tribute to Freddie Mercury-the very talented and flamboyant lead singer of Queen who died of complications from AIDS at 45 yo in 1991; and also to the much loved Princess Diana whose life and works have influenced a new generation of Royals through Princes William and Harry.

September is upon us and is an important month for men’s health via Blue September–a nationwide awareness and fundraising campaign to fight all cancers (not just prostate) involving men. And conversely, in 1940-41for German people who were disabled, physically deformed or had mental illness the Reich had a Euthanasia campaign to purify the race. This also included gays.

On a brighter note, about 2 centuries ago, Louis Daguerre invented the process of saving photographic images. There had been a camera obscura for a long time which used a pinhole to project an image of a scene upside-down onto a viewing surface but there was no way to save it until then.
