What exactly is fair trade?

The ‘corporate cause’ phenomenon has entered the supermarket aisles in recent years like never before. There’s a product in just about every category nowadays purporting to better the world or society in some way.

One of the more common terms used is “fair trade”. What was once reserved for a special line of premium products seems to have become far more commonplace, with even Starbucks sourcing its entire range from fair trade suppliers.

Fairtrade Austrlia and New Zealand seeks to ensure a minimum price and decent working conditions. More than six million people – farmers, producers, workers and their families – in 70 countries benefit from the Fairtrade system.

Susanna Bevilacqua is the organiser of the 2014 Fair Trade Mothers’ Day High Tea. Joining Ben Rylan and Jimmy Bourke, she discusses the many benefits of fair trade and how it has transformed from a niche into mainstream products.
