Australian Open 2014 – Day 9
Right at the end of day 9 we were treated to another epic 5 setter between Stan Warwinka and Novak Djokovic. Last year the two played a 5 hour match with Novak winning, and this year Stan was the man , becoming the first person to knock Novak out of the Aussie Open since 2010. It was a quarter final day that the Swiss star will always remember. Novak praised Stan’s ability to come up with the big serves at crunch times in the match. This year we will have a new champ but Novak is still proud of his run.
There was another big battle of the hotties on centre court as Euginie Bouchard took on Anna Ivanovic. The young Canadian Eugenie became the first of her kind to make it to an Australian Open semi final, after winning an intense struggle in 3 sets. And she did it all with her Aussie based Genie army by her side. Like Maria sharapova, Anna revealed she too was playing with an injury this tournament.
David Ferrer had an awkward moment where he appeared to make contact with a line judge during his 4 set loss to Thomas Berdych. We also discovered that this was surprisingly Thomas Berdych’s first ever win on Rod Laver Arena, and what better way to do it than in a quarter final.
Li Na easily beat Flavia Penetta 6-2, 6-2 earlier in the day. She really needed to please her coach Carlos after recently disappointing him on court. Li is still striving for her first Aussie Open title.
A new Asian tennis league will get under way in may and it will involve shorter matches, more money for players, and more team interaction. players Lleyton Hewitt and Mahesh Bhupathi announced the exciting new International Premier Tennis League to the world.
