World AIDS Day 2014: Get Involved

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have passed. Melbourne will acknowledge this important day with various events in the lead-up to and on the day.

Everyone is encouraged to attend all events; please note they are free unless a ticket price or entry fee is listed.

YEAH, the Youth Empowerment Against HIV AIDS organisation, is uniting with the Victorian AIDS Council and JOY 94.9 at Federation Square on Sunday 30 November  for a special event to remind us all that World AIDS Day is about people. Dress in red and come along to this free event for exciting entertainment, inspirational presentations, amazing music, great giveaways and more. YEAH, VAC and JOY – uniting to remember, educate and honour for World AIDS 2014.

21 Years of JOY 94.9 – Outside Broadcast & Display

Proudly supported by the City of Melbourne

On Monday December 1, JOY 94.9 will celebrate 21 years on air with a free exhibition and outside broadcast live from the Melbourne Town Hall’s Yarra Room. Celebrate as JOY looks back at the people, music, interviews, events and more that have brought 21 years of amazing radio. The broadcast will acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the individuals and organisations who contribute to HIV and AIDS support and awareness, and JOY 94.9’s contribution to this and other important LGBTIQ community issues.

A collection of JOY memorabilia will be on display, highlighting the station’s history and involvement in significant community events across the past 21 years. This event is free and all are welcome to attend. JOY 94.9 thanks the City of Melbourne for their sponsorship of this event.

World AIDS Day Official Launch

WAD LaunchJoin Living Positive Victoria at the official launch of World AIDS Day 2014 at St Paul’s Court, Federation Square to remember the 36 million people worldwide who have lost their lives to HIV and AIDS. This event acknowledges all people currently living with HIV, as well as the triumphs of science, medicine, policy and community in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The theme of this year’s launch event is ‘Zero Discrimination’ and challenging stigma via the ENUF campaign. There will be a keynote speech from Mark Stoove from the Burnet Institute highlighting HIV and public health research, as well as speeches from two inspirational HIV-positive speakers discussing their journeys of living with HIV and challenging HIV stigma.

Following the launch, enjoy a morning tea in the Yarra Room at Melbourne Town Hall at 10:15am to celebrate JOY 94.9’s 21st birthday and the World AIDS Day broadcast.

World AIDS Day Memorial Service

quiltThe Victorian AIDS Council’s annual memorial service is an opportunity for us to stop and remember those we have loved and lost since the beginning of the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

The Quilt Project memorial quilts will be on display at the Positive Living Centre during the ceremony and throughout AIDS Awareness Week (26 November to 2 December). During the memorial, there will be a special guest speaker and entertainment. The memorial is a collaborative effort undertaken by VAC, Living Positive Victoria, the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project, the Catholic AIDS Ministry, Straight Arrows, Positive Women and Youth Empowerment Against HIV (YEAH).

‘HIV & Mobility Roadmap for Action’ and ‘HIV & Stigma in Australia: A Guide for Religious Leaders’ launch

HIV & Stigma in AustraliaLiving Positive Victoria, the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) and Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health launch the ‘HIV & Mobility Roadmap for Action’ and ‘HIV & Stigma in Australia: A Guide for Religious Leaders’. The HIV & Mobility: Roadmap for Action report calls for a coordinated approach to better support our mobile and migrant communities and the challenges we face together when responding to HIV. ‘HIV & Stigma in Australia: A Guide for Religious Leaders’ aims to encourage greater participation of religious leaders and members of faith-based communities in Australia’s HIV response and assist leaders of faith communities to better understand how HIV impacts their communities.

Voices of ENUF Exhibition

Voices of ENUFVoices of ENUF is an exhibition aiming to provide a fresh perspective in challenging community attitudes that can stigmatise and discriminate against people living with HIV. The project engaged people living with HIV through a creative, inclusive and collaborative artistic process to portray real experiences of HIV-related stigma and discrimination. The exhibition is an outcome of Living Positive Victoria’s anti-HIV stigma campaign, ENUF, which seeks the experiences of both stigma and resilience in all of its many and various forms from people living with HIV.

Viva Variety Concert – World AIDS Day Eve Red Party

SircuitThis special fundraiser for ENUF sees the community come together to remember our supporters, partners, the message and you! Presented by Yarra Social Hub and Polly Filla Productions.

$10 entry fee, all proceeds to ENUF. The ENUF campaign aims to seek the experiences of both stigma and resilience in all of its many and various forms from people living with HIV.

World AIDS Day Breakfast and Presentation at the Doherty Institute

Doherty logoThis event will feature a welcome from Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty and an address by Professor Sharon Lewin, the inaugural Director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, about the latest progress and challenges towards finding a cure for HIV. The panel will also include Brent Allan, executive officer of Living Positive Victoria, and will be chaired by leading HIV scientist Professor Stephen Kent. Following on from the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014), which took place in Melbourne in July this year, the event will also include a panel discussion that is reflective, retrospective and visionary about HIV for Melbourne, Australia and the world.
