JOY Wins CBAA Best Special Event Broadcast Award for 2020 Mardi Gras Broadcast
Congratulations to everyone involved in JOY’s 2020 coverage of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras for taking home the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia Best Special Event Broadcast Award!
Following last year’s award-winning broadcast we were able to achieve the same level of inclusive and diverse content, but this year we did it all live! This broadcast would not have been possible without our Mardi Gras partners Salesforce who made it possible for us to get to Sydney, and who marched side-by-side with us in the parade, and the support of the Sydney Bear Bar at the Burdekin Hotel for providing us with a broadcasting space.
It took 23 people across Sydney and Melbourne to create this four-hour broadcast, with many listeners writing in to share their stories and send their love to Sydney. We spoke to people of all ages, genders and abilities, as well as people from diverse cultural backgrounds, first time parade-goers and seasoned Mardi Gras attendees. Thank you to everyone who made the trek to Sydney and to everyone who stayed in Melbourne to make this possible. This was truly a team effort, and it is a testament to the power of hard work, creative use of technology and keeping the community in community radio.
