Diary of a Work Experience Student: Clara

We welcomed Clara into JOY studios this week as a part of her work experience for year 10. She brought us fantastic insights, very funny one liners and a general keenness to learning about JOY. We asked her to describe her experience with JOY, so that we could learn from her, and here’s what she had to say-

“My name is Clara, I am 15 years old, and I have lifelong interest in storytelling, in a general sense. I’m interested in all forms of media and creative fields, which has become a bit of a problem for me when assessing the numerous career possibilities for my future.

Recently, I had the pleasure of a year 10 work experience placement at Joy Media. This allowed me to have a closer look at the general media field. Particularly, I gained a new appreciation and awareness of radio sector and audio medium. I Initially had less of an interest in the audio format and had limited understanding of it. However, thanks to my time at Joy, I have not only become more familiar with the audio format but have developed an interest and enjoyment in it.

I thank the wonderful team at joy, from the moment I arrived the environment was nothing but warm and welcoming. Each member of the team was happy to take the time to explain and present the different aspects of their jobs to me. Especially though, I thank all those who invited me to observe and even participate in some of the work that took place, your patience, trust and resolution are all greatly appreciated.

During the time I was able to sit in for a couple of interviews and even participated in an episode of one of joy 94.9 Radio programs. Where I was the guest score keeper for the quiz show Pop Queers! I got to be present for the final preparation and recording period, which gave me an inside look into the many processes and work that goes into creating a podcast. I feel so lucky to have had that memorable opportunity and cannot thank the team involved enough.

The new insights and experiences I gained from this short period, will be a lot of help to me in the future. Most notably, my time at Joy Media has given me a deeper understanding of what a career in general media and content production, may entail. But it was also just a really great time.”
