Vote for Sam Elkin, JOY’s Local Hero!

We are very proud to share with you that our very own Sam Elkin has been nominated in the Westfield Southland Local Heroes Awards. This award recognises everyday people who have an important impact on our local communities. After a rigorous assessment process, Sam’s nomination has progressed to the community voting stage, and we need your vote!
The top three finalists, as voted by the community, will go on to receive a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation from Westfield Centre. If Sam is successful, JOY 94.9 will use its grant to cover production costs for a season of podcasts and the cost of transcribing existing episodes to make them accessible to the deaf community.

Capturing the important social history of the transgender and gender diverse community

Sam Elkin is the co-creator of Transgender Warriors on JOY 94.9, showcasing the artistic achievements and activism of transgender and gender diverse communities. “I’ve gotten the opportunity to interview so many amazing people along the way, from the UK musician and best-selling author C.N Lester to one of the formative Australian transgender rights trailblazers Kayleen White“, shared Sam.
“I am grateful for this opportunity to get more people engaged with the history of transgender rights and culture, and it’s truly an honour to have this work recognised by the broader Victorian community”, he added. “Please take the time to vote so that JOY 94.9 can give others the opportunities I’ve had to tell some more important stories about our creative and resilient LGBTIQ+ community”.
