Season 3 is here!

Season 3 is here!

JOY 94.9’s season 3 started on Monday 1 July 2013. We are pleased to welcome some fantastic new programs and say thanks to some who are taking a short break, and regretfully announce the longer-term departures of some favourites.

New programs

Our new programs for Season 3 are:

Kisses & Disses is a music-based dedication show where listeners are encouraged to dedicate a song to either a loved one or someone they perhaps aren’t quite so fond of. Out of love or in love, the show keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek as Shane and Elliot provide a voice for queer hearts that want to be heard. Similar in theme to TTFM’s Love Song Dedications with Richard Mercer – only with two gay lads at the helm!

Stand Up Straight will provide a vehicle for our straight allies to stand up for our GLBTI family – to encourage and create greater inclusion, share stories, give advice and facilitate change towards greater acceptance and celebration of our GLBTI communities.

Turn The Beat Around will focus on the music of the 70s and 80s soul and disco music. It will be coupled with song facts, chart stats, history of song, and there will be themed shows throughout the course of the program, eg. million sellers of the disco era, samples show, Madonna special.

Jade Gulliver returns to JOY for one season only with Handclaps & Harmonies, a two-hour music program: a combo of strummy lala, plinky lala, handclaps, reverb and harmonies, plus some indie electro pop songs.

Aesthetica aims to discuss and feature arts and culture in and around Melbourne, statewide and potentially nationally. It provides an opportunity for discussion not only of festivals, exhibitions and theatre, but of broader arts and culture, including literature.

Retiring programs

Due to the presenters’ work commitments, Salt & Pepper is retiring from JOY 94.9. Big thanks to Pete and Serena for their groundbreaking current affairs program over the past couple of years.

Unfortunately, Cookie and Kevin have decided to retire The Cubby House from live on-air programming at JOY, but you will still be able to catch up with the boys on their regular podcast-only programs.

And due to an interstate relocation, Max will be retiring Drag Time after a couple of seasons.

Resting programs

The following programs are resting during the upcoming grid:

A big thanks to all of you for your efforts since you’ve been on air, or since your last break, and we look forward to your return soon.

Returning programs

We have a couple of our favourite programs returning:

Time changes

Several of our existing programs will have new timeslots in Season 3:

Breakfast & Drive programs

For Monday Breakfast, Hannah and Dan join forces to bring you the Weekender Extender following the retirement of Kane and Kyle.

The Royal Daltons are travelling the world for the next couple of months, so Tuesday Breakfast is running up the behind of Thursday drive: Froth’s SJ and the C+C Drive Factory’s Chris will bring “Crash Radio”, Wednesday drive 4pm – 7pm.

And finally, we welcome Oh my Gawd! It’s Anastasia – Anastasia K taking a tight grip on the reins of Thursday breakfast from 27 June.

JOY 94.9 has four broadcast seasons per year beginning on the first Monday in January. Subsequent seasons begin on the first Monday of April, July and October, respectively.

We have more than 70 presenters on air during any one season, and JOY maximises the welfare of our volunteers by asking them to regularly take breaks and to come back fully refreshed for a new season.

Although you might miss a particular program while it takes a break, there are plenty of others among JOY’s diverse specialty programs that are sure to draw your interest.

JOY 94.9 is always on the lookout for new content that reflects the diversity of the gay and lesbian communities we serve – diversity of voices, diversity of spoken word, diversity of music genre.

Find out more about becoming a program maker at JOY on our volunteer page.
